Obituary

ALBANY –
Christina Mary Giordano (née VanSteen), age 81, of Albany, NY, passed away peacefully on August 4, 2025. She was born in New York, NY, in 1944.
Christina is survived by her three daughters and their partners: Stacey Giordano and wife Xiomara Giordano, Denise Giordano and partner Peter Connelly, and Susann (Giordano) Wheeler and husband Matthew Wheeler. She was the beloved grandmother of Liam and Sif Hefta, Grace and Sara Connelly, and Nathaniel and Alexander Wheeler. She is also survived by her former spouse, Daniel Giordano, her cherished sister-in-law, Marie Lafaro, and her much-loved former son-in-law, Joseph Hefta.
Family was central to Christina's life, and she was instrumental in their lives in many ways. Her daughters' and grandchildren's lives were enriched by her care, love, and attention. She maintained close relationships with her nieces and nephews and their children. Christina was predeceased by her treasured siblings, Helene (VanSteen) MacPherson, Ray VanSteen, and William (Bill) VanSteen, along with her parents, William and Frances (Woyton) VanSteen.
A graduate of Massapequa High School, Christina pursued her calling in healthcare by studying nursing at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow, NY. She dedicated her long nursing career to caring for the elderly in the Capital District. Christina believed that residents in nursing homes deserved quality care and strove to improve the institutions where she worked. She worked alongside many wonderful people who made lasting impacts on her life through their shared commitment to compassionate care and professional dedication.
For many years, Christina made her home at the senior living community Ohav Shalom in Albany, NY, where she found deep friendship and purpose. Her friends brought richness to her life, and she gave back to her community by writing and publishing a monthly newsletter, The Journal . Christina remained actively engaged in causes close to her heart, demonstrating her lifelong commitment to advocacy through her political activism for civil and seniors' rights. Her dedication to political engagement even led to her appearing in a television campaign ad for Senator Chuck Schumer.
Throughout her life, Christina enjoyed the company of many good dogs and took great pleasure in crafting, cake decorating, antiquing, and interior decorating, bringing beauty and warmth to the spaces around her.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to the medical staff at St. Peter's Hospital for their care and compassion.
A private ceremony will be held in the future.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to any civil rights, seniors' rights advocacy charities, or an animal rescue in Christina's memory. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared with the Giordano Family, online at: SimpleChoicesCremation.com
