Daniel Dudley Price

Jul 15, 1953 — Oct 24, 2026

Daniel Dudley Price passed away on October 24th, 2026 after living for six years with multiple myeloma.

Born on July 15, 1953 in Albany, NY, Dan attended Ranger School in Wanakena, NY, earning a degree in Forest Technology. He worked with the forest service in Oregon as a forest ranger before returning to Albany, where he started a family and a career as a rural mail carrier. He began at the Feura Bush Post Office and was with the Voorheesville Post Office until retirement. After retirement he worked part-time at Thacher State Park and Five Rivers Environmental Education Center.

Dan loved being a father and grandfather. He enjoyed spending time outdoors with his family, instilling in them a lifelong love of nature. Throughout his life he could often be found with family on nature walks at Five Rivers or Thacher Park, where he would point out a leaf or pattern of bark and announce a “tree test” to his children or his grandchild. Over the years he also enjoyed going with his family to Schoharie and picnicking, skipping stones in the water, looking at old gravestones at the Old Stone Fort Cemetery, and going to the Historic Blenheim Covered Bridge, carving his initials as his parents and grandparents had done.

Dan loved to travel, but one of his favorite places to go with his family was a little closer to home; a simple rented cabin on Black River, where he enjoyed tubing, fishing, fossil hunting, and most of all, relaxing in the peace and quiet of the woods. Many summer days were also spent at Sacandaga Lake with extended family, barbecuing, swimming, and waterskiing. He also loved visiting his daughter and her family in Grafton, NY, and his son in Vancouver, Canada. He enjoyed spending holidays and other special occasions with his sister Sue, his nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Dan's lifelong interest in science fiction was a hobby he loved to share with his family and friends, discussing sci-fi TV shows and watching movies together. When his children were young, he would watch Tom Baker-era Doctor Who serials and Star Trek with them, and as adults he connected with them over shows like Lost and Battlestar Galactica. He invested in their hobbies growing up as well, learning how to play their favorite video games and enjoying the same musical tastes.

Through his love of reading, Dan became an expert in many historical topics, particularly World War II. He had an impressive collection of books on the topic. He also had an extensive vinyl record collection, and in the 70’s and 80’s he enjoyed going to concerts at SPAC, where he photographed many of his favorite bands up close from seats in the pit. He loved a good Yankees game, riding his bike, and playing golf. As a younger man, he played softball on several teams at once, most notably for Empire Deli. Dan had a great sense of humor, and could always get his family and friends laughing with his quick wit.

Dan was predeceased by his mother Maureen (Flinn) Price, his father William Price, his stepmother Ruth O. Price, and his siblings William D. Price and Carolyn Price-Valenti. He is survived by his daughter Jillian M. Price (Michael Schwabe), and his grandson Jasper Schwabe, all of Grafton, NY, his son Mark Price, of Vancouver, Canada, his sister Susan (Emmanuel) Gomes, of Albany, NY, nieces and nephews Jaimie, Jesse, and Zachary (Amanda) Gomes, Alexa and Brandon Valenti, and many cousins and friends.

Dan will have a private green burial at Kateri Meadow Natural Burial Preserve. To honor his memory and love for nature, memorial contributions may be made to Thacher State Park or Five Rivers Environmental Education Center.
