Donald Ralph Turner, Jr.

​Donald “Donnie” Ralph Turner, 57, of Troy, NY, passed away on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at Samaritan Hospital in Troy.

​Donnie was born to Vivian (Flavin)Tomaski. He had a healthy childhood, but began a lifelong battle with mental illness in his early 20s. He was often misunderstood by those around him and his struggles shaped him into a resilient survivor. He had a quiet strength and a big heart.

Donnie made his home at a Unity House residence, where he found stability and peace alongside his housemates. Donnie was seen enjoying his daily routine on the street corner of 15th and Hutton Streets in Troy. The love from his community was realized by his family after his passing. Classic rock and cigarettes brought him comfort and joy, and he looked forward to frequent visits from his Aunt Jackie. In a final, profound act of generosity, Donnie served as an organ donor and passed on the priceless gift of life to others in need.

​Donnie’s life was enriched by an extended network of family, neighbors, and advocates. His memory will be cherished by his mother, Vivian, and stepfather, John Tomaski; his sister, Jessica, and brother-in-law, Christian Garneau; his nieces, Agnes and Bridget Garneau; and the many community members who counted him as a friend. Donnie was the first born of 23 grandchildren and is also survived by 6 maternal aunts and a large Irish family. He was reunited in death with his maternal grandparents, Jack and Agnes Flavin, and his uncle, John Flavin (Doria), all of Averill Park, who loved him dearly.​Donnie's family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Troy emergency first responders and Samaritan Hospital nurses and doctors, whose dedication and care meant so much. The family would like to thank the Center for Donation and Transplant who helped them navigate through a difficult time with ease. Very special thanks are also given to the frontline staff at Unity House, who served selflessly every day to care for Donnie and his housemates. His family is also deeply grateful to the owners and staff of the XV Street Convenience Store and June's Unisex Hairstyling salon, who truly connected with Donnie and whose daily kindness and generosity lifted his spirits and improved his life.

A Christian mass is being planned by his family.
