Joanne Sokaris (Van Wormer), 83, of Colonie, New York, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2026. Born on August 23, 1942, Joanne lived a life centered around family, love, and simple joys.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Theodore Sokaris, and four of her children, Barbara Bauer, William Sokaris, Cheryl Sokaris, and Patti Sokaris.
Joanne is survived by her devoted daughter, Lisa Sokaris, who lovingly cared for her. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren, Valerie Hewitt (Randy Ray) and Stephanie Grunert (Mike Grunert), who were truly the light of her life. Her great-grandchildren, James, Robbie, Jeremy, Sonny, and Eliana brought her endless joy and laughter, and she treasured every moment with them. Joanne is also survived by her brothers, Harold Van Wormer and Edward Van Wormer. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Carol Szemplinski and Patricia Urshel.
She leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews, extended family members, and her faithful cat, Panda. Joanne dedicated approximately fifteen years of service to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. She enjoyed gardening, crafting, camping, swimming, and spending time at the beach. Above all, she loved being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who meant the world to her.
Those who knew Joanne best will remember her loving heart, fierce devotion to her family, and her stubborn spirit. Strong-willed and determined, she faced life's hardships with resilience and grace. Her family will forever cherish the laughter, memories, and countless stories that made her one of a kind.
In accordance with her wishes, there will be no services. Those wishing to honor Joanne's memory are encouraged to plant a flower in her honor and keep her family in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. She will be forever loved, deeply missed, and fondly remembered always.
