Joel W. Levy, 83, of Niskayuna, NY, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2026. Born on May 7, 1943, to the late Olive and Ira Levy, Joel grew up in New York before spending many contented decades swimming and sunning in Florida. In his later years, he returned to his beloved upstate New York to be closer to home and family.
Joel had a passion for the outdoors and loved hiking, particularly around Crane Mountain, where his parents once owned a cherished house and cabin. Known for his unique and strange personality, he was an avid history buff and was a fan of Frisbee golf, Dungeons & Dragons, and classic horror stories. He spent many years studying sword fighting, achieving brown belt status. His sharp and often warped sense of humor leaned toward the macabre, which perfectly suited his favorite time of year, late autumn. He appreciated the brilliant orange of the leaves and the creepiness of the houses decorated for Halloween. As a father, he brought this creative, gory flair to his children's upbringing, inspiring them with vampire and werewolf stories. He also famously invented dark bedtime stories about his original characters.
Above all, Joel loved his family fiercely. He is survived by his two devoted children, Joseph Levy and Carolyn Cadoret née Levy, and his two beloved grandchildren, Ollie Cadoret and Jonas Cadoret.
A private remembrance will be held by the family to celebrate Joel's life and the lasting stories he left behind.
