NIVERVILLE- Marybeth Claire Gottshall, 66, died on her birthday, July 23, 2014, at Albany Medical Center. Born in Seattle, Washington, she was the daughter of Norma Groves Soden and Robert Soden. She grew up in Germany and Korea before attending Michigan State University to study art. After college she lived for many years in East Lansing, Michigan, where she raised her daughter. She moved to Columbia County in the early 90's, and there she developed many close and sustaining friendships and painted prolifically. Marybeth held several jobs during her life, but art was always her vocation. Her paintings embody her pleasure in careful composition and the qualities of color and light. She also loved to work in her garden, and was a talented guitarist and singer. She loved parties and celebrations, and had a wonderful sense of humor and a beautiful laugh. Survivors include her mother, Norma Andrew, and her daughter Karin Gottshall, her sister Roberta Brill, her brother Timothy Soden-Groves, and many dear friends and relations.An informal memorial potluck will be held on August 9.
