Peter David Hobert

Peter David “Chip” Hobert, 56, of Castleton, New York, died on September 3, 2026, following a medical emergency.

Chip was born June 9, 1970, in Landstuhl, Germany, the son of Peter and Susan (Bourlon) Hobert. After spending several of his early years in Phoenix, Arizona, his family returned to Schodack in 1980, and it remained his home for the rest of his life. He attended Maple Hill High School as a member of the Class of 1988 and later attended Hudson Valley Community College.

At the center of Chip’s life for more than three decades was Krissy—his partner, his wife of 29 years, and his best friend. Together they built a home and a life filled with shared history, familiar routines, laughter, and memories. Theirs was the kind of closeness that comes from growing older together. Through all the changes the years brought, they were deeply connected and devoted to one another.

A mechanic by skill and instinct, Chip had an extraordinary aptitude for diagnosing, repairing, or building almost anything, often understanding what it needed simply by looking at it. His tools were more than possessions; they were an extension of himself.

Chip lived life very much on his own terms. Those who knew him knew a man who was genuine, fearless, fiercely protective of those he loved, independent, stubborn, funny, direct, and never inclined to follow anyone else’s script.

He was happiest outdoors. Chip loved doing yard work, riding his quad through the local trails, spending quiet evenings on the back deck, and watching the animals that shared the space around his home. He especially enjoyed the geese that returned to his pond year after year, learning their migration patterns and habits. Beneath his tougher exterior was a person who found real contentment in animals, nature, solitude, and the familiar places he called home.

Chip is survived by his wife, Kris Lee Hobert; his mother, Susan Bourlon Hobert; his sister, Lis Hobert Cinelli, and her husband, Josh Thomas Cinelli; his beloved mother-in-law, Nancy Lee Derks, who introduced Chip and Krissy; and extended family. He also leaves behind a close circle of friends who were family to him in every way that mattered. He was predeceased by his father, Peter Jack Hobert, who died in 1978, when Chip was still a child.

There will be no traditional funeral service. Instead, family and friends will gather for a celebration of Chip’s life, with details to be announced separately.

Chip left an impression wherever he went. He was the kind of person people remembered—not because he tried to stand out, but because there was simply no one else quite like him. His humor, loyalty, talents, quirks, and way of moving through the world will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.

He was entirely, unmistakably Chip.
