Peter James Masterson III, age 83, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2026, at the VA Medical Center in Albany, New York, surrounded by the comfort of his family and care team.Born in Troy, New York on May 8, 1943, Peter grew up on North Lake Avenue and attended La Salle Institute before answering the call to serve his country.

 A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Peter served honorably from 1964 to 1968. As a qualified submariner, he took great pride in his time serving beneath the waves, completing tours of duty aboard the USS Sterlet and the nuclear-powered USS Tecumseh. For his dedicated service to his country, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.Following his military service. 

Peter returned home to the Capital Region and spent his career in the local beverage distribution industry. For many years, he worked alongside his father at his father's business, Trojan Beer Distributors in Troy, and later continued his work with Keis Distributors. Outside of work, Peter loved the outdoors—especially time spent at Crooked Lake. He looked forward to every deer season, thoroughly enjoying the time spent at hunting camp and the great camaraderie he shared alongside close family and friends. On many weekends he could also be found out on the golf course enjoying a round. In addition to his pastimes, he was deeply committed to his fellow veterans. He proudly served as Vice Commander at the Valley Falls VFW Post 1938 for many years and was a dedicated member of the Earl J. Manning Stillwater American Legion Post 490.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter J. Masterson Jr. and Elizabeth (Clancy) Masterson. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Rosemary (Austin) Masterson; his children, Peter A. (Melissa) Masterson and Kevin Masterson; and his grandchildren, Elizabeth, Peter M., and Annamay. He also leaves behind Brandie Bink, who was loved like a daughter, and her children, Amelia and Ben; his siblings, Mary Susan Masterson, Paul Masterson (the late Ann), and Ellen (Jack) Cuilliton, as well as many loving nieces, nephews, and their families.

Interment with military honors will be held at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery at the convenience of the family. All family and friends are warmly invited to join the family for a Celebration of Life gathering at the Earl J. Manning Stillwater American Legion Post 490, 1 American Legion Road, Stillwater, NY 12170. Details regarding the date and time of the gathering will be announced once finalized.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Peter’s honor to the Albany Stratton VA Medical Center, 113 Holland Ave., Albany, NY 12208.
