Obituary

GUILDERLAND –
Peter B. McHugh, 80, of Guilderland, NY, passed away suddenly but peacefully on July 24, 2025, after a full life filled with friendships, lively conversation, music, and family.

Born on October 17, 1944, in Washington, DC, Peter was the son of the late J. Weir and Eleanor McHugh. He was raised in Niskayuna, NY, and graduated from Colgate University in 1966. Soon after, he served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

After completing his service, Peter returned to Albany to earn his law degree from Albany Law School. He spent his legal career practicing real estate and bankruptcy law in Schenectady. He formed a trusted partnership with attorney Dennis Englert, and the two worked side by side for decades. Peter's desire to give back extended beyond his law practice. He served on several local and state boards over the years, including the Schenectady Local Development Corporation and the New York State Freshwater Wetlands Appeals Board. But Peter's truest joys were found at home and among those he loved. He shared 54 years of marriage with Marie-Louise. Together they raised two children, Samuel and Emilie, of whom he was so proud.
A talented singer and guitar player, Peter's love of music was lifelong; — music was in his soul. He performed with friends for more than five decades and was a member of the PSG from the early 1970s right up until his passing. Whether at informal gatherings or small venues, Peter's music was one of his ways to connect with others. In retirement, Peter divided his time between Guilderland and Sarasota, FL, where he enjoyed playing golf, making music, and spending time with family and friends.

Peter is survived by his wife Marie-Louise; his children Samuel (Tracie) and Emilie (David); his beloved grandchildren Gavin & André McHugh and Michael & Owen Rivers; his brother Greg (Denise); and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and close friends.

Services will be private.
