Saratoga Springs, NY — William “Bill” Louis Quirin, 83, passed away at his home in the presence of his loving family on Monday, August 10th, 2026.
Bill was born in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan on November 29th, 1942, to Karl and Cecilia (née White) Quirin.
He spent his formative years in Mineola, NY, in a house his father designed. The oldest of three boys, Bill idolized the great Mickey Mantle as a child and would spend his life rooting for the New York Yankees and the New York Rangers. He graduated from Regis High School, then attended Saint Peter’s University in New Jersey as an undergraduate before earning his doctorate in Mathematics from Rutgers University.
Bill taught Mathematics and Computer Science at Adelphi University for more than 50 years, where he met his late wife of 51 years, Diane, who also taught at Adelphi. He served as Chair of the Mathematics Department for a number of years. Throughout his career, he was beloved by his students and took immense pride in their education.
In addition to teaching, he wrote and published many books, predominantly on Thoroughbred handicapping and golf club histories. Bill loved to play golf as well, and was quite good at it—as the story goes, while on his honeymoon, another party of golfers playfully compared him to Jack Nicklaus. But few things could provoke his ire quite like being outdriven by his younger brother Don with a 5-iron.
Bill and Diane made their home in Garden City for several decades, where they were longtime parishioners of Saint Anne’s Church. Bill regularly took up the collection at the 5:30 Mass on Sundays. They formed an enduring friendship with Anton and Patricia Hemm, and Anton often joined Bill for trips to Belmont, Aqueduct and Saratoga.
Bill loved music and took great care in curating a collection that ranged from the Moody Blues and Pink Floyd to Garth Brooks and George Strait. In his final days, he was surrounded by the music he loved.
He is survived by his daughter, Kristin (Kernan); sons Daniel and James; son-in-law Bob Kernan; grandchildren Riley and Lucas; brothers Jack and Don and Don's wife, Pat (née Parker); and his beloved dog, Tebow. He is predeceased by his wife, Diane; his parents, Karl and Cecilia; and his brother Jack's wife, Gudrun.
Donations in Bill’s honor can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org).
A Mass celebrating Bill’s life will be held at Saint Anne’s Parish in Garden City, NY, on Wednesday, August 26th, 2026, at 10 a.m.
